Coleman was born in Lancashire, and born in the town of Blackpool. She was a student at the Arnold School in Blackpool where she was head girl and gained straight As in her A-levels. Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman, who had replaced Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor following Arthur Darvill left the series, would be playing the role with Matt Smith.
